CHILDREN LEARN WHAT THEY LIVE AND LIVE WHAT THEY LEARN
Imam Dr. Zijad Delic

As I was reading through Father John’s and Rabbi Michael’s amazing posts I remembered the wise words said in 1993 by Dorothy Law Nolte: Children Learn What They Live…and thought how timely these words are. The words go as follows:
If children live with criticism, they learn to condemn.
If children live with hostility, they learn to fight.
If children live with fear, they learn to be apprehensive (nervous).
If children live with pity (shame), they learn to feel sorry for themselves.
If children live with ridicule, they learn to be shy.
If children live with jealousy, they learn what envy is.
If children live with shame, they learn to feel guilty.
If children live with tolerance, they learn to be patient.
If children live with encouragement, they learn to be confident.
If children live with praise, they learn to appreciate.
If children live with approval, they learn to like themselves.
If children live with acceptance, they learn to find love in the world.
If children live with recognition, they learn to have a goal.
If children live with sharing, they learn to be generous.
If children live with honesty and fairness, they learn what truth and justice are.
If children live with security, they learn to have faith in themselves and in those around them.
If children live with friendliness, they learn that the world is a nice place in which to live.
If children live with serenity, they learn to have peace of mind.
With what are your children living?
Yes, I agree, children develop attitudes, positive or negative, in the early formative years; they observe and listen to the family members and absorb all from his or her surrounding just as a sponge absorbs all liquids that it touches.
Thus, the family is the first school which a child attends and if that school offers him or her a sense of belonging and a healthy platform with values such as respect for others, kindness and compassion, mercy and forgiveness, he or she will have something to offer back to the family, the community, the nation and the world; otherwise, this child could become a source of annoyance to all. Knowledge about ourselves and our place in the world is essential for the acceptance and respect of others with whom we live.
If we would like to predict a nation’s failure (decline) or success (progress), we just have to look into their attitude towards education given to the youngsters of that nation.
It is impossible for those who have neglected or abandoned their young generation in terms of education to take even a single step forward. As for nations that have brought their children/youth up well, they are always ready for progress.
