OUR CHILDREN WERE SEPARATED FROM OUR MOTHERS
FATHER JOHN WALSH

As Canadians we know our aboriginal sisters and brothers were restrained on reserves and many of our sisters went missing and were confirmed dead. It began with the separation of our sisters and brothers from our mothers and when they were put in residential schools they were mistreated and abused. A cultural genocide ensued when native girls and boys were culturally morphed into little white girls and boys. So it is easy to mouth the words “we are all sisters and brothers” but the reality is that it is our sisters and brothers who are separated from our mothers and it has left deep wounds that we all were taught at the Truth and Reconciliation Commission at its many hearing throughout Canada. The result of the inquiries and what is expected is chartered in the ninety-six recommendations in the final report of the Commission. We ought to pay great attention and make every possible effort to implement these recommendations. We will have to swallow our very own words, “my sisters and brothers. There will be long-term shame if justice is not meted out soon. There is Governmental responsibilities but our personal responsibility is to hound our elected officials about each of the recommendations. Here is a suggestion: Form ten teams of ten people each and assign one recommendation to each individual who must do everything within her or his power to make sure that recommendation is being followed up and acted upon. Report back to the group of ten to which you were assigned or chose when new information becomes available and make your progress known to all ten groups once every months. As Canadians we can be beacons of hope through our efforts to do justice, uphold human rights, and build a world of peace and love.
Now at the Mexican-American border there has been and continues to be our three thousand sisters and brothers separated from our mothers. It was a wake-up call in Canada and at the border it is a clarion call for justice. We may deplore the situation but who can imagine the wounds inflicted on our children when they are forcibly separated from their mothers for days and months on end. Governmental agencies have actually lost track of children who desperately need to be reunified with their mothers. We need to scream injustice and reject a “zero-tolerance policy” that will continue to separate our children form our mothers. Remember children have no sense of time. When children do something wrong and the discussion of the wrongdoing is put off until the next day, children honestly do not recall what they did the previous day was wrong. Mothers know children have to deal with the situation immediately; otherwise the answer will inevitably be “I did nothing wrong.” Children only experience the present time. The three thousand of our sisters and brothers have not seen our mothers for a very long time. Many have gone missing and many are dying emotionally, a death that can be avoided. How many may be scared for life and never fully recover?
We may have less of a voice about the American policy of separation but we need to have a strong voice when it comes to fulfilling the recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission right here in Canada. What we do may be a beacon for the world that injustices can re righted, human rights can be upheld and we have a major part in making this world a better world!
