UPRISINGS AGAINST DICTATORS IN THE ARAB WORLD

Libya, Syria and Egypt witnessed an Arab Spring against its dictators. A see-saw of armed power was seen from that of the rebel troops to that of the governments. Social networking united like-minded people in the desire to rid themselves of what they experienced as oppressive regimes. They wanted release from the shackles of control and the muting of their voices. They wanted freedom and democracy. The Arab Spring was thought of as a relief from the winter of oppression. A sense of solidarity burgeoned and the people wanted power to be restored to the people. Violence ensued. Armed retaliation against the rebels was to squelch the causes of the demonstrators. Red flags were raised to warn the world of an impending doomsday. The uprisings rested on unshakeable solidarity. Would the world wait for history to judge what action should have been taken? Who would be concerned about the human condition and the suffering plight of so many human beings? Would the world remain silent! The violent oppression of people in Arab countries spills over its borders and flows into the minds of the West. Will the West remain a spectator in the face of human tragedy? The complexity of the world cannot be resolved on the basis of simple solutions. The uprisings against dictators ensue from the Arab Spring. The nature of the international response, the rationale offered for intervention, and the failure to respond in certain notable crises raise serious questions which require the attention of all religious people. Pope John Paul II, with the leaders of all the world religions, signed The Decalogue of Peace at Assisi, and it reads: “We commit ourselves to make our own the cry of those who do not surrender to violence and evil, and we wish to contribute with all our strength to give a real hope of justice and peace to the humanity of our time” (8th commandment). Contrarily there are those who quote Matthew, “Do not think that I have come to bring peace on earth; I have not come to bring peace, but a sword,” yet, the overwhelming spirit of the New Testament is reflected in John, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.” The loss of respect for human life is cause for all religious people to forget whatever differences may separate them and unite in an inter-faith response that will reclaim what humanity must treasure most: life itself. The prophetic nature of the Christian is to scream justice and to seek the truth of faith.
