WILL THE CHOICE BE AI OR CONSCIOUSNESS?
WILL THE CHOICE BE AI OR CONSCIOUSNESS?
Father John Walsh
A modern author raises the question, will we chose AI or consciousness? It is a question that we must all face. Ai has already turned us upside down. We are the implication if we choose AI? The effects o AI are already at work in our lives. AI is reducing the number of menial tasks human beings were forced to do. However, the greatest effect so far is that AI is turning each of us into an algorithm. What is an algorithm? The absolute simplest definition is: An algorithm is a set of guidelines that describe how to perform a task. One example is when you insert a coin into a coffee machine the process that renders a cup of coffee is an algorithm. An algorithm is less familiar to us so the very mention of it emphasizes our uncertainty. An algorithm powers our social media news feeds. Algorithms—most promising—and most troubling!—may be their ability to decide what we see and how we see it. Are humans and algorithms mutually exclusive? Think about Facebook; it is not just monitoring how long you spend looking at each post, it is also carefully evaluating what we actually want to see, focusing on us, and not just on the underlying math. They carry out cool stuff but they have to create complex pictures. We have to make sense of them! If we don’t, they might replace our consciousness and we would could become a useless generation.
We develop consciousness. We may not fully understand how consciousness develops but we do know that it requires a sustained effort. Consciousness may reflect the law of nature that for every effort there is an equal and opposite reaction. The every effort is one of learning more and more about who we are as human beings and our place within ever expanding universes. The opposite reaction is one of ignorance. It takes our acceptance of our ignorance for us to make even greater efforts to learn and understand who we are and why we are on this planer earth. The mutuality of learning and ignorance is a life–long process of on-going refinement of consciousness. AI may remove monotonous routine from our lives but only consciousness enhances the quality of our lives
AI may even reduce the meaning of “faith” and provide algorithms of rites and rituals which would center faith on piety without any influence on the world around us. However faith is proportionate to our consciousness; faith develops as we plummet the depths of our consciousness to respond to all the relationships human beings have to the world and beyond to the biosphere; to creation, to the environment, to poverty, to homelessness. The development of our consciousness and our faith, whatever our faith tradition, will lead to intimations of transcendence and offer us the ability to express in everyday language the meaning of faith for today’s contemporary world. AI will never replace humans as long as humans render consciousness the only viable way to understand life on earth.
