Father John Walsh

In the aftermath of the killing of seventeen students in Parkland, Florida, young women and young men have spoken to authority. One student said, I don’t want to go to school and the first thing on my mind is to look for the closest exit. The words of the leaders of the March for Life throughout the United States were without rancor, but were courageous. The want an end to the folly of the irresponsible sale of guns without proper screening and without certain guns unable to be purchased. Shame on us adults who have not forcefully spoken out against the folly of an armed society in which the battle will be won by those who have the strongest guns and use it first. The greatest folly of all would be to think of Armageddon as a final battle of good against evil, a religious victory of good over evil. Courageous are the meek, they shall inherit the earth. The light flickered and was almost extinct when we thought of tomorrow’s doomsday scenario. Young women and young men have carried to torch and lighted the way with new hope for a brighter future.
In October 2018, Pope Francis has convened a Synod of Bishop to address the theme, youth, faith and vocational discernment. Francis has told young women and young men, “give us an earful.” The Bishop of Rome wants a youthful face to the church. Young people, not only Roman Catholic, but all young people can go on line and fill out the questionnaire. Speak to authority. Let the chips fall where they may. Don’t hold back. All the kings’ horses and alt the kings’ men couldn’t put humpty dumpty back together again. It is not a time to tear down the church; it is time to build up the community of faith to be in a post-modern, post-human world, a world of AI and advanced technology and to forge and fashion not only a renewed church, but a totally new Church. Newness is of God and God delights in the new.
The words of General Romeo Dallaire in his book, They Fight Like Soldiers, They Die Like Children are worthy to be repeated:
We cannot wait for our leaders to take action. Don’t tell me you’re not being heard — its that you are not speaking. Slow and predictable progression is no longer a given for young people today, born into a wide-open and limitless world. We’re actually in era of revolution. The future will be in your face so soon that you will wonder how you got left behind. Your challenge, then, is to lead in a time of perpetual and rapid change. There are no sidelines anymore. You don’t have twenty years to work out your priorities, dreams and passions in the comfort of your milieu. You are looking at a future that is not only very near but one that is within your power to affect. We are entering an era in which evil has no place to hide and there is no limit to how we can present the good.
Go forth and invent, create and become a new generation of multidisciplinary individuals dedicated to ensuring that all members of the human race thrive on our vulnerable planet in peace and serenity. Attack with courage and energy those hang-overs of the past that put the whole exercise of universal humanity at risk. Not only can you make a difference, you are ethically responsible to do so. Your generation must be a generation of activists. Develop your own ideas. Instead of asking yourself, “What do I want to do with my life?” ask, “If I had one or two years to devote to something, what would that something be?” What would you do? Get engaged in fighting to stop the conflicts adults created. Go and smell, taste, feel, see, heard and cry with your peers, so many of who are starving for love, aching for release from the grip of conflict, hoping that one day they will again find the inner world of childhood — they will be aided in their desire to grow into mature, responsible adults, parent of future generation of children with a chance to be safe and happy.
The Church, as seldom before, needs our young women and young men to speak out NOW.
